Creating triple-A video game titles is a key tool for raising awareness about sustainability, say experts from the ESDESIGN institution
NotiPress.- Currently, Antarctica registers a temperature of 40 degrees above average, exceeding the previous maximum by about 20 degrees, especially in the Latin American region. This was revealed in a report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) shared to NotiPress by the Barcelona School of Design (ESDESIGN).
Another report carried out by the Evaluation of the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Climate Change of the United Nations (IPCC), highlighted that in Latin America it has been felt very strongly. A key aspect which has left these countries as the most vulnerable, added to the economic and social inequality in the area.
Aware of this, the educational institution ESDESIGN makes a call to take specific actions on climate change and understand that it is a joint effort (society, institutions and governments). Therefore, technology has played a key role, especially in the video game sector, a strange industry in that area.
For example, according to the analysis firm Newzoo, he highlighted that in 2021, video games will have generated about 180 million 300 thousand dollars. In addition, the number is expected to increase to 203 million; According to experts, this trend should be used to create awareness about the environment.
Due to this, ESDESIGN experts shared with NotiPress some games to give away this Christmas season and enjoy in the company of family or friends, while raising awareness. One of them is “Cities Skylines: Green Cities”, where players focus on minimizing pollution through the sale of organic products from local farms. The sustainable cities simulator tops the list of video games for touching on a very important issue today, ecology and the power of humans to do something about it.
In second place, there is “Final Fantasy VII”, since the story focuses on two social problems; social inequality and the environmental crisis. The game developed by Square, frames a futuristic environment and presents a world with different social classes and fight for natural resources whose domain is part of a large corporation.
Similarly, “Endling” places players in a story where the protagonist is a mother fox, who must travel through a dystopian, cold and desolate world to feed her cubs. Players through the mother fox must explore the remains of nature and they are the only saviors of the planet Earth.
Also, The Sims 4 released an expansion called “Ecological Life”, which immerses players in a sustainable world. The life simulator developed by Electronic Games allows users to create renewable energy, community projects, among other 100% sustainable missions.
“Grow home” is another of the games that generates environmental awareness among video game fans. The Ubisoft company developed the story of a robot whose mission is to search the galaxy to find plants and help a giant plant called Star Plant grow. In this way, users will be able to oxygenate the planet through entertaining levels and history, an aspect that is not alien to reality.
For ESDESIGN experts, videogames can play a key role in promoting awareness of the environment and the sustainability outlook. Additionally, the educational institution invites video game fans interested in the environment to exploit their creativity in their classrooms and create a new generation of video games.
