No.It is not the same concept, nor does it have a rich history of decades of evolution and a sporting record that supports it like the 911, but today, it almost overshadows Porsche’s most iconic product: the Taycan surpasses it in number of orders and it has already reached 100,000 units produced in just three years, a remarkable achievement considering that it is only manufactured in one plant and is not a vehicle with affordable prices.
Presented in September 2019, its acceptance could not have been better: several months before being launched and when only a few images of units in their final testing phase were known, the 100% electric sports saloon already had more than 4,000 orders and last year it reached the peak of its demand so far, surpassing the mythical Nine-eleven. Currently, the markets where the most units are sold are China, the United States and the United Kingdom, and the star unit of this milestone will soon leave for British soil, a Taycan Turbo S painted in the exclusive Neptune Blue tone that recently came off the assembly line. of the Zuffenhausen industrial complex, the company’s headquarters, demonstrating that its strong commitment to electrification paid off.
Available in three different variants, the four-door saloon, the family version -Taycan Sport Turismo- and even a version with adventurous aesthetics -Taycan Cross Turismo-, at the design level, the Taycan retains almost all the lines of the Mission E concept, with clean and curved surfaces that are accentuated with some more marked lines to give it greater dynamism. It combines some hallmarks of the 911 with those of the Panamera, such as the format of the rear doors, but with a much more futuristic air and its own details, such as the more oval front lights and the characteristic four-point lighting signature.
Inside, as in the latest generation of the 911, technology takes center stage, replacing the classic analog clocks with fully digital instrumentation configurable by the driver, although as a nod to its tradition, its design is made up of Through several spheres that provide all kinds of information, from speed or autonomy, to the driving mode or navigation instructions.
In our country, the Taycan is marketed, with its three versions called 4S, Turbo and Turbo S -this name, despite the fact that they do not have a turbocharger, was chosen to maintain the Porsche tradition-, which are powered by two electric motors. fully synchronized -one located on the front axle and one on the rear axle- so they have, of course, all-wheel drive.
The 4S version is positioned as the entry-level option and has a 79.2 kWh capacity battery, while the 93.4 kWh -Performance Plus- battery of the other two versions is offered as an option.
In this case, the power is 530 CV -571 CV if Performance Plus is chosen. Despite its lower power, it does not compromise on performance: it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). The biggest difference is in autonomy: 407 kilometers for the standard version and 463 kilometers for the Performance Plus, as well as charging capacities of 225 kW and 270 kW respectively.
For its part, between the Turbo and Turbo S versions, the difference lies in the Overboost function: while in the Turbo the power increases for a few seconds to 680 CV, in the Turbo S it increases to 761 CV. In this way, the entry-level version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and reaches 200 km/h in 10.6 seconds. In the case of the most powerful, the figures are impressive: it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and reaches 200 km/h in 9.8 seconds. In both cases, the top speed is limited to 260 km/h.
Both engines will be powered by a 90 kWh capacity lithium-ion battery pack, which gives it a range of 450 kilometers in the Turbo version and 412 kilometers in the Turbo S variant. But that’s not all, through its system 800 volts, it allows a quick recharge -of 15 minutes-, enough to travel about 400 kilometers.
Another reason for Porsche to celebrate is the reliability and performance that its first EV is demonstrating: several units accumulate close to 200,000 kilometers of use and their batteries maintain their capacity practically intact, with 91% of their useful life ahead.
Electric furor: Porsche has already manufactured 100,000 units of the Taycan
