There 79th Venice International Film Festival (August 31 – September 10) is about to open its doors. AND, after the announcement of the programmereveals the details of the appointments with the films of the various sections (the ticket office opens today 17 August at 3 pm) and the events to mark on the calendar.
Between great Hollywood celebrities and epic tales, this edition represents one of the richest in recent years and there are already bets on which title is the favorite for the Oscar race. The award season begins right on the Lido, at the court of already established filmmakers or new voices.
Here, then, is a daily handbook with the most important events. For those who practice VIP-watching, however, we leave the day before with Danieli cinemathe private event he celebrates Jury President Julianne Moore (on the evening of the 30th at the Hotel Danieli in Venice).
Wednesday 31st August
The opening of the official selection is marked by White Noisethe Netflix horror from Noah Baumbach with Adam Driver And Greta Gerwig. The Horizons section instead opens with Princessthe story of a young Nigerian illegal immigrant.
Thursday 1st September
There are two appointments to keep an eye on in the context of the Competition. First the divine Cate Blanchettwho plays the first German conductor in tar (in Italian cinemas on November 3), in one of the most awaited performances. And then Bardsigned by the Argentine Alejandro G. Inarritu (on Netflix by the end of the year), on the crisis of a Mexican documentary maker. Horizons, on the other hand, proposes the biopic Veraabout the actress True Gem.
Friday 2nd September
Abel Ferrara presents his Father Pio with Shia LaBeouf (the actor, however, will not be on the Lido) in the Days of the Authorswhile the Competition unleashes one of the most awaited titles, Bones and All from Luca Guadagninowith his pupil Timothee Chalamet dealing with a history of teen cannibalism.
Vanity Fair with the Red Sea Film Festival organize the gala night «Women’s Stories» to celebrate women in the film industry at Palazzo Rocca Contarini Corfù in Venice.
Debuts the Vanity Fair Club at the B Bar at the Bauer hotel in Venice.
Saturday 3rd September
The documentary All the Beauty and the Bloodshed by Laura Poitras on the photographer Nan GoldinLGBT+ champion, presents itself as one of the most impactful stories of the Competition, together with Argentina, 1985 with Ricardo Darin, on the trial of the soldiers of the dictatorship of the time. They also intrigue the ultimate transformation of the aethereal Isabelle Huppert in The syndicalist (for Horizons) and the horror turn of My Goth in Pearl (Out of competition).
In the evening the most awaited event of the Film Festival, The dance of light Vanity Fair with Giorgio Armani at Ca’ Vendramin Calergi in Venice.
Sunday 4th September
Elodies made his film debut with I eat your heart from Pippo Mezzapesa next to John Anzaldo (Orizzonti), while today two of the five Italian films are scheduled for competition. Penelope Cruz (Volpi Cup 2021) is at the service of The immensity from Emanuele Crialese (in theaters from 15 September) e Patricia Clarkson for monica from Andrea Pallaoro. The visionary Darren Aronofskyinstead, hires Brendar Fraser for The Whale.
Monday 5th September
Even if out of competition, perhaps the event of the festival remains: Don’t Worry Darling from Olivia Wildea futuristic project in which the boyfriend directs Harry Styles. Before the screening, the costume designer Arianne Phillips is awarded the prize Campari Passion for Film.
In competition, however, Colin Farrell stages the Irish drama about a broken friendship, The spirits of the island (in theaters from February 2, 2023). Caroline Cavalli debuts behind the camera with the female story of Amanda (Extra Horizons), which also boasts in the cast Blessed Porcaroli.
Tuesday 6th September
Tilda Swinton presents The Eternal Daughter in Competition, mind Penelope Cruz does an encore with En los margenesdirected by Juan Diego Botto (Orizzonti), who audiences recently saw in front of the camera as Margot Robbie’s nemesis in the sequel to The Suicide Squad.
John Amelio tells the tragic true story of the poet Aldo Braibanti convicted of plagiarism: ne The lord of the ants with Aelius Germanus And Louis LoCascio (in theaters on September 8) we talk about mental health, homosexuality and prejudices.
Wednesday 7th September
Director Evgeny Afineevsky tells about one of documentaries most poignant about the ongoing war in Ukraine, Freedom On Fire: Ukraine’s Fight For Freedom. And, always Out of Competition, Casey Affleck stages a cross-section of Seventies music in Dreamin’ Wild.
Anthony Hopkins And Hugh Jackmanmeanwhile, stage the family drama The Son (in Competition).
Thursday 8 September
It is the day dedicated to Marilyn Monroe with the Netflix biopic Blonde (in competition) with Ana De Armas. At the same time Paolo Virzi plays the drama Drought (Out of Competition).
Lighter notes, however, at lunch at the Sina Centurion Palace in Venice for the award dedicated to the next generation, the young influencers who tell the story of the Exhibition (including the Hyena Nicolò De Devitiis).
Friday 9th September
The short film Look At Me from Sally Porter tells Out of Competition an unedited couple formed by Javier Bardem And Chris Rock. Susanna Nicchiarelli is the only female director in competition with Clearanother story of holiness with the face of Margaret Mazzucco (The brilliant friend).
Saturday 10th September
The day of the awards ends with the Golden Lion but also includes the awards of the other sections, such as the International Critics’ Week. Alessandro Borgo meanwhile presents The Hanging Sun from Francesco Carrozzini (Out of Competition).
