The sea in dialogue with the earth, to cooperate with man to enhance the “Third Landscape”, the abandoned places; marine sounds made tangible and present to the community through installation paths; new plant and animal species reared directly in the city before returning to the sea. These are some of the original ideas at the heart of the thesis projects of Interior Design – specialization in Event scenography – discussed in IED Milan from different groups of graduates who have chosen to work, in their last year, on the project launched with Marevivo Association. The non-profit organization, active since 1985 in the protection of the marine environment and sustainable development, enhances protected marine areas and promotes culture and respect for the sea, also through educational projects in collaboration with schools.
The synergy with the Milan office of the European Institute of Designwith the aim of leveraging the new promises of creativity and design to specifically enhance theMarine Protected Area “Capo Milazzo”, managed by the relative Consortium. The brief focused on the design of emotional and engaging installations for Capo Milazzo, a stretch of coast florid of biodiversity and with unique and precious naturalistic features, to be made known and preserved. On this basis, i young designers have studied experiential and educational paths on land and in the water, aimed at contemplating nature, respecting and enhancing the territory and promoting it in an entirely sustainable way. The bridge – geographic and generational – that gave rise to the collaboration between the Capo Milazzo Marine Protected Area and IED was cast by the artist, director and photographer Giuseppe La SpadaAlumnus of the Institute he teaches today: “Twenty years ago I would not have imagined that my relationship with IED would one day lead to a thesis project on my city and its sea, Milazzo. Thanks to the Coordinator Giacomo Bertolazziwhich accepted this request for collaboration with Marevivo and the Marine Protected Area, the pure and futuristic thinking of many students who dream of a better world thanks to the power of creativity has taken shape, and has made it possible to contribute to enhancing a territory whose beauty is often little considered. The project is an example of how the synergy between various actors it can be hope for the future of places and people“. “Marevivo’s collaboration with the IED and the Consortium represents a tangible example of the importance of involving young people on the need to have the sea protected. We share the proposals desired and written by the boys, whose heartfelt and lively commitment makes us hope that all together we will succeed“- he declares Carmen Di PentaGeneral Manager Marevivo Onlus.
THE PROPOSALS. Seven projects presented in the Thesis Commission (with Fabrizio Bertero lecturer e Simona Marzoli co-rapporteur), in the presence of the General Manager of Marevivo, Carmen of Pentaof the Mayor of Milazzo, Pippo Midiliby the researcher of the University of Messina Nancy Spanò and the President of the WAP, Giovanni Mangano. Among these there is SEAMPHONYfrom Lucrezia Buzzoni, Orsola De Fiori And Andrea Roma: a set of four installations on land and at sea, in a journey in stages along the whole promontory of Capo Milazzo – tangible, real but also ephemeral – for express l‘importance of marine sounds, raise awareness of the community on the sound dimension of this ecosystem and support its biodiversity. Proceeding towards a climax of “purification”, we start from the scenario of an acoustically polluted sea and ends with the creation of a healthy and acoustically purified coral reef. The first installation hosts the infopoint and an interactive and playful videomapping to disseminate the problem (often underestimated) and shed light on possible solutions. We then continue with listening to the sounds of individual marine creatures from different vantage points of the promontory up to the third installation which, thanks to a scenography of lights, projections and sounds, reproduces the healthy coral reef and finally free from noise pollution. The route ends at the sea, where the sounds of a healthy marine habitat are transmitted. Then there is the proposal (COL) SEA THE EARTHfrom Camilla Giuliani, Chiara Molteni And Anthea Sangalli: a landscape intervention that connects the Marine Protected Area, made up of sea and land, with the city, to preserve and enhance what the Frenchman Gilles Clément defined Third landscape: the set of all the “places abandoned by man” present on earth.
The intervention passes from the deep knowledge of forgotten places present in the territory of Milazzo, transforming them, thanks to the active participation of man, into shelters for the diversity of fauna and flora, with the aim of protecting it and giving it a new life. The interventions, which will create a dialogue between sea and land, involve the use of natural materials, because a positive action on land also positively influences life in the sea. The project focuses on a network of people who care about the protection of the environment, the promotion of culture and social inclusion, through the creation of 4 gardens, places where the action of the individual is fundamental for the conservation of biological diversity.
SEA GARDENS from Beatrice Bernasconi, Elena Gabbianelli, Pietro Gallese And Allegra Gargiulofinally, it aims at the requalification of the seabed of Capo Milazzo with the breeding of animal and plant species in order to create a new ecosystem and at the same time educate on issues related to the serious problems of our seas. It foresees the presence of a laboratory in the city dedicated to marine species at risk, in which to monitor their birth before transferring them to the water to finish the growth and then release them in the Marine Protected Area to repopulate the seabed. On the awareness-raising front, the focus is on the inclusion, within schools, of aquariums that students will have to take care of throughout the year. Furthermore, anyone can support the project using the Sea Gardens website, which will allow them to make a donation or adopt endangered marine species. Some itinerant information installations will eventually move in the major cities of Italy and in the main aquariums of Europe to create an active network of connections and take the beauties of the Capo Milazzo territory out of the Sicilian borders.
