5 answers to the doubts you had about the metaverse | DPL News

Today the metaverse still seems like an abstract and futuristic concept. Its development is barely in process, but its scope, implications, the actors involved, the challenges and the opportunities it will trigger are already being discussed.

Jordan Fieulleteau, Policy Manager of Meta Reality Labs (formerly Facebook), explained some of the most important doubts that exist around the metaversethat new environment of digital spaces in which there will be a greater interconnection between people, companies and brands through immersive experiences.

“We believe that the metaverse is the next generation of the internet(…) a natural progression in the development of the Internet”, an ecosystem in which people will be able to do things that until now they cannot do in the physical world, he stated during the forum Opportunities, challenges and challenges of the metaverse in Mexicoorganized by the Ibero.

1. Will the metaverse be free?

Yes but no. The users of the metaverse will have the freedom to carry out activities that they could not do beforeor to perform them more easily, as well as to engage in new experiences and interact with other people in all parts of the world.

For example, it will be possible to attend concerts in the metaverse or travel to places in a virtual and immersive way. However, the Meta specialist warned that there will also be restrictions and rules in the different applications and platforms linked to the metaverse, with the aim of having order, mediating interaction and ensuring the integrity and security of all participants.

So, in the same way as in the physical world, freedom will exist but it will have limits, such as the restriction of engaging in violent behavior. Or else it could unleash chaos and violate the rights of other people.

2. Will the metaverse be free?

Not really. Jordan Fieulleteau pointed out that, although some services and applications do not charge fees to use them, access will require people to purchase devices or hardware.

The technology around the metaverseincluding immersive environments or devices such as Virtual Reality glasses, will require huge investments that will be covered through different mechanisms.

Target estimates that the metaverse will have a 2.8 percent contribution to the Gross Domestic Product after 10 years of adoption, the equivalent of just over three trillion dollars.

This means that the metaverse it will also be a business spacebecause the developer companies will earn from the sale of the technology and there will also be other forms of monetization, through advertising, for example.

“There will be certain platforms that will be free, but others will require technology (…). It will not be free, but it will be more free as more companies and devices are available in the market”, pointed out Fieulleteau.

3. Will there be an ‘owner’ of the metaverse?

Another question that arises when talking about the metaverse is whether there will be an owner or a company that has power over what happens and is done in these environments. The Meta executive assured that it will not be like that. No tech giant will have the power or ability to control the metaverse.he claimed.

There are already several companies who are designing and building applications, solutions and platforms linked to the metaverse. In addition to Meta, companies such as Googlethe art auction house Sotheby’s, Hyundai, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Nike and others more.

For this reason, Jordan Fieulleteau pointed out that governance of the metaverse will be a shared responsibility between all the actors that participate in its development, in addition to the governments of the different countries, since in this new environment diverse people and cultures will converge.

4. How will privacy be guaranteed?

The creation of the metaverse will only be possible if principles of responsible innovation are followed, which consider people as the center of the ecosystemsaid the manager of Reality Labs Policies.

One of the biggest concerns is privacy and the protection of personal data. The Greater interaction and provision of interconnected applications and services will generate a greater volume of information. The challenge will be to adequately safeguard all this data and create security mechanisms and transparency for its treatment.

Fieulleteau commented that “privacy will be one of the central issues of the metaverse”. The companies involved must improve your data collectionits privacy policies and ensure the integrity of people, or the metaverse will not have the expected success.

5. Will everyone have space in the metaverse?

Perhaps one of the most important concerns is how to make the metaverse an inclusive and equitable environment, taking into account inequalities and violence experienced in the physical world and, until now, they have been replicated in Internet spaces.

The Meta specialist explained that moderation, rules, and restrictions will have to focus on allowing anyone to access the metaverse.

Alsomechanisms and tools will have to be created to protect the integrity and security of certain user groups, such as children, women or ethnic minorities, with the aim of ensuring that interactions are diverse and inclusive.
